A short history of inflation in Sierra Leone
Civil War and After (1991 to 2002)
Sierra Leone's civil war destroyed the state's capacity to tax or to govern much of the country for eleven years, and the leone lost value steadily throughout. Rebuilding after 2002 was interrupted by the Ebola epidemic of 2014, which closed borders and markets and cost the economy a year of output.
Redenomination and the Food Shock (2022 to 2023)
Decades of depreciation left the currency carrying so many zeros that on 1 July 2022 three were struck from it, a thousand old leones becoming one new one. Redenomination changes the arithmetic rather than the cause, and prices continued to climb: the country imports most of its fuel and a large share of its rice, and the global food and energy shock landed on an economy already unable to hold its currency steady.
