A short history of inflation in Tanzania
The East African Drought (2011 to 2013)
Tanzanian inflation peaked at 19.8% in the year to December 2011, in the same regional episode that hit Kenya and Uganda: drought across East Africa raising food prices, a weakening shilling raising fuel costs, and a household basket in which food carries far more weight than it does in richer countries.
It came down over the following two years as the rains returned and the Bank of Tanzania tightened. The pattern since has been steadier than most of the region's, though the same exposure remains: Tanzanian inflation is driven more by harvests and the exchange rate than by anything happening in domestic demand.
Post-Covid Inflation (2021 to 2023)
In Tanzania, prices rose fastest in January 2023, at 4.9%. The causes of the post-Covid inflation were global in nature, beginning with the lockdowns: factories and ports closed and the shipping between them fell out of sequence, so goods took longer to make and longer to arrive. Governments had spent heavily supporting household incomes through those closures, so when restrictions lifted there was money waiting to be spent and not enough on the shelves to spend it on. Then in February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine, disrupting two of the world's largest suppliers of wheat, fertiliser, oil and gas at once, and the cost of everything grown, heated or transported rose with them.
