A short history of inflation in Angola
Civil War (1975 to 2002)
Angola fought a civil war from independence in 1975 until 2002, financed by oil revenue and, when that fell short, by printing money. Inflation ran into four figures during the 1990s and the currency was replaced twice. Peace in 2002 and rising oil prices brought it down to single figures within a decade, though the reading of 113.5% in the year to April 2003 shows how far there was to come.
The Oil Cycle (2014 onwards)
The underlying dependence remained. When the oil price fell after 2014 the kwanza fell with it and inflation returned, which is the recurring shape of Angolan economic life: an economy where one commodity funds the state, and the currency and the price level follow that commodity wherever it goes.
Post-Covid Inflation (2021 to 2023)
In Angola, prices rose 27.7% in the year to January 2022, and further still afterwards for reasons of its own, reaching 31.1% by July 2024. The causes of the post-Covid inflation were global in nature, beginning with the lockdowns: factories and ports closed and the shipping between them fell out of sequence, so goods took longer to make and longer to arrive. Governments had spent heavily supporting household incomes through those closures, so when restrictions lifted there was money waiting to be spent and not enough on the shelves to spend it on. Then in February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine, disrupting two of the world's largest suppliers of wheat, fertiliser, oil and gas at once, and the cost of everything grown, heated or transported rose with them.
