A short history of inflation in Burundi
Civil War and Isolation (1993 to 2005)
Burundi's civil war lasted twelve years and was followed by regional sanctions and the suspension of much foreign aid, in one of the poorest countries in the world. Coffee provides most of what export earnings there are, and the economy has never generated enough foreign currency to pay for what it needs to import.
The Foreign Currency Shortage (2015 onwards)
Aid was cut sharply after the political crisis of 2015, and the shortage of dollars became acute. The central bank could not supply importers at the official rate, so a parallel market opened in which the dollar traded at a large multiple of the official quote, and fuel shortages became routine. Goods bought at the unofficial rate are priced at the unofficial rate, which is how the gap between the two exchange rates reaches shop shelves.
