What this site is
Compare Inflation publishes the consumer price index of 108 countries and a calculator that works out what a sum of money in one month is worth in another. Every figure on it is the number that country's own statistics office published, not an estimate or a model of our own.
It exists because the question it answers is easy to ask and surprisingly hard to look up. Most inflation calculators cover one country. Most sources that cover many countries publish a spreadsheet rather than an answer. This site tries to do both: give the figure directly, and show the series it came from.
What it does not do
It is not financial advice and does not try to be. It says what happened to prices, not what will happen to them, and nothing here is a recommendation about what to do with money.
It also does not forecast. Where a figure is missing it is left missing, and where a series begins late the page says so rather than filling the gap with a guess.
How it is kept current
Nothing here is updated by hand. The figures are fetched from the publishing offices on a schedule, and the pages are rebuilt from them, so a page changes when the data behind it does and not otherwise. Statistics offices revise recent months after first publication, and the figures here change with them.
