A short history of inflation in Seychelles
The Balance of Payments Crisis (2008)
The Seychelles reached 63.3% in the year to December 2008, which happened to a country of fewer than a hundred thousand people in the space of a few months. The rupee had been pegged at a rate the economy could not support, so foreign currency was rationed and a black market did the real pricing while official reserves ran down to almost nothing. In July 2008 the country missed a payment on its external debt.
On 3 November 2008 the rupee was floated and immediately lost more than half its value against the dollar. For an island importing nearly all its food and fuel, that was the entire price level moving at once. An International Monetary Fund programme and a debt restructuring followed, and inflation was back to nothing within two years, but the episode is a compact demonstration of what an overvalued peg postpones rather than prevents.
Post-Covid Inflation (2021 to 2023)
In Seychelles, prices rose fastest in May 2021, at 11.4%. The causes of the post-Covid inflation were global in nature, beginning with the lockdowns: factories and ports closed and the shipping between them fell out of sequence, so goods took longer to make and longer to arrive. Governments had spent heavily supporting household incomes through those closures, so when restrictions lifted there was money waiting to be spent and not enough on the shelves to spend it on. Then in February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine, disrupting two of the world's largest suppliers of wheat, fertiliser, oil and gas at once, and the cost of everything grown, heated or transported rose with them.
