A short history of inflation in Laos
The Kip Collapse (2021 to 2023)
Laos borrowed heavily through the 2010s to build hydropower dams and railways, much of it in foreign currency, on the expectation that electricity exports would repay it. When debt service came due the country did not have the dollars to meet it; the kip lost a large part of its value and inflation reached the highest rates in South East Asia.
A landlocked economy that imports its fuel and much of its food passes a falling currency almost directly into shop prices, and the shortage of foreign exchange produced fuel queues as well. The episode had little to do with the global inflation of the same years and everything to do with the debts.
