A short history of inflation in Liberia
The Dual Currency Crisis (2018 to 2020)
Liberian inflation reached 31.3% in the year to August 2019. Liberia uses two currencies at once, its own dollar and the United States dollar, which circulate side by side, so confidence in the Liberian dollar is measured continuously against an alternative that people can simply switch to. Through 2018 and 2019 it lost value quickly, amid budget deficits and a public controversy over the printing and handling of new banknotes that damaged trust in the institutions responsible.
An International Monetary Fund programme and tighter control of the money supply brought inflation down from 2020. The dual currency arrangement remains the central feature: it limits how far the central bank can act, because a population able to hold dollars will do so as soon as it doubts the alternative.
