A short history of inflation in Turkey

Chronic Inflation (1970s to 2001)

Turkish inflation was chronic for three decades rather than a single episode. It held above 50% for most of the 1990s and peaked at 125.9% in the year to January 1995, following a currency crisis the previous April. The causes were fiscal: persistent government deficits financed through the central bank, a fragile banking system, and frequent changes of government, which together made any promise to bring inflation down difficult to believe. Sustained at that level it becomes structural, with contracts indexed to it and savings held in somebody else's currency.

Stabilisation (2001 to 2005)

It was brought down after the banking collapse of 2001, under a programme combining fiscal consolidation with a newly independent central bank. On 1 January 2005 six zeros were struck from the lira, so that a million old lira became one new one; the currency was called the New Turkish Lira until the end of 2008 and then reverted to its old name. Inflation was in single figures by the middle of that decade and stayed there for more than ten years.

Post-Covid Inflation (2021 to 2023)

In Turkey, prices rose fastest in October 2022, at 85.5%. It met the same shocks as everyone else, the tangled supply chains of the lockdowns and then the energy and food prices that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but they were the smaller part of its story. Through 2021 the central bank had been cutting interest rates while inflation was already rising, and the lira fell heavily against the dollar; an economy importing most of its energy pays for a falling currency in its shop prices. The global shock arrived on top of a domestic one well under way, which is why Turkish inflation went so much further than its neighbours' and stayed high for longer. In June 2022, with prices rising 78.6% a year and a presidential election a year off, Erdoğan's government asked that other languages call the country Türkiye, and the United Nations agreed.

The major inflation events sets out the episodes behind most of the world's inflation.
