A short history of inflation in Iran

Revolution and War (1979 to 1988)

Iranian inflation has been high for most of the period since 1979. Revolution, the flight of capital and skilled workers, and then eight years of war with Iraq left a government spending far more than it could raise, with oil exports disrupted and the difference met by the central bank.

Sanctions and the Rial (2012 onwards)

The pattern since has been driven by sanctions. Restrictions on oil exports and on access to international banking limit the foreign currency available to pay for imports, so the rial falls on the open market; a government short of tax revenue and cut off from borrowing abroad meets the gap by creating money. The tightening of sanctions from 2012 and again from 2018 each produced a sharp fall in the currency and a corresponding rise in prices, and Iranians have long quoted large sums in tomans, or in dollars.
