A short history of inflation in Egypt
Bread and Subsidies (1977 onwards)
Egyptian governments have treated the price of bread as a question of public order since January 1977, when an attempt to reduce food subsidies under an International Monetary Fund programme produced two days of riots across the country and was reversed within forty-eight hours. Subsidised bread, fuel and electricity have shaped the budget ever since, and reducing them has been the recurring condition of external support.
The Currency Crisis (2016 and 2022 to 2024)
Egypt floated the pound in November 2016 as a condition of an International Monetary Fund loan, halving its value and sending inflation above 30%. The pattern repeated from 2022: a shortage of foreign currency, three devaluations between March 2022 and January 2023 that again roughly halved the pound, and a further one in 2024. As the world's largest wheat importer, drawing most of it from Russia and Ukraine, Egypt also met the grain shock directly.
