A short history of inflation in Switzerland
The Interwar Swings (1921 to 1945)
Switzerland's two largest price movements both belong to the middle of the last century. Prices fell more than a fifth at the trough of the deflation that followed the First World War, and rose 17.7% in the year to August 1941, when wartime shortages met a country surrounded by belligerents and cut off from much of its usual trade.
The Stability Record (1950 onwards)
Nothing since has come close to either, and the reasons are structural. Switzerland has run current account surpluses for decades, the franc has appreciated over the long run rather than depreciated, and imports therefore tend to get cheaper in franc terms rather than dearer, which offsets domestic price pressure. The Swiss National Bank has treated price stability as its purpose since well before that became the international norm.
Post-Covid Inflation (2021 to 2023)
In Switzerland, prices rose fastest in August 2022, at 3.5%. The causes of the post-Covid inflation were global in nature, beginning with the lockdowns: factories and ports closed and the shipping between them fell out of sequence, so goods took longer to make and longer to arrive. Governments had spent heavily supporting household incomes through those closures, so when restrictions lifted there was money waiting to be spent and not enough on the shelves to spend it on. Then in February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine, disrupting two of the world's largest suppliers of wheat, fertiliser, oil and gas at once, and the cost of everything grown, heated or transported rose with them.
