A short history of inflation in Sri Lanka
The Default (2021 to 2023)
Sri Lanka's inflation had almost nothing to do with the global episode of the same years. Tax cuts in 2019 had gutted government revenue, tourism collapsed in the pandemic, and an abrupt ban on chemical fertiliser imports in 2021 cut the rice harvest. Reserves ran out, and in April 2022 the country defaulted on its foreign debt for the first time in its history. Fuel queues lasted days, power cuts were routine, and protests drove the president from office.
The rupee lost roughly half its value and prices rose accordingly. Inflation fell as quickly as it had risen once an International Monetary Fund programme was agreed and the currency stabilised, and Sri Lanka adopted a formal inflation target in 2023 as part of the reforms.
