A short history of inflation in Kazakhstan
The War Next Door (2022 to 2023)
Kazakh inflation peaked at 21.3% in the year to February 2023, a year after Russia invaded Ukraine. Kazakhstan's trade, payments and transport run largely through Russia, so the sanctions imposed on one economy passed directly into the other: the tenge fell sharply in the weeks after the invasion, and imported goods and food led the rise.
The country had entered that year already unsettled. In January 2022 the removal of a price cap on vehicle gas doubled its cost overnight and set off the worst unrest since independence. Inflation has come down since the 2023 peak but remains the highest of any country added to this site in 2026.
Post-Covid Inflation (2021 to 2023)
In Kazakhstan, prices rose fastest in February 2023, at 21.3%. The causes of the post-Covid inflation were global in nature, beginning with the lockdowns: factories and ports closed and the shipping between them fell out of sequence, so goods took longer to make and longer to arrive. Governments had spent heavily supporting household incomes through those closures, so when restrictions lifted there was money waiting to be spent and not enough on the shelves to spend it on. Then in February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine, disrupting two of the world's largest suppliers of wheat, fertiliser, oil and gas at once, and the cost of everything grown, heated or transported rose with them.
